Los Santos, officially the City of Los Santos and commonly abbreviated as L.S., is a major city in southern San Andreas and the county seat of Los Santos County. It is the state’s principal centre for finance, entertainment, international trade and culture, and is particularly associated with the Vinewood film industry. The city is divided into numerous districts and neighbourhoods, ranging from the commercial centre of Downtown Los Santos to the coastal communities of Del Perro and Vespucci.
Los Santos, officially the City of Los Santos, is a major city in southern San Andreas and the administrative seat of Los Santos County. It is one of the country’s largest economic and cultural centres, with major industries in entertainment, finance, international trade, tourism, manufacturing and fashion.
The city is particularly associated with Vinewood, the centre of the motion-picture and entertainment industries. Los Santos also contains one of the country’s busiest airports and its largest commercial seaport.
Los Santos is characterised by considerable social, economic and architectural diversity. Its districts include the commercial high-rises of Downtown, the entertainment venues of Vinewood, the affluent communities of Rockford Hills and Richman, the beachfront neighbourhoods of Del Perro and Vespucci and the industrial districts of East and South Los Santos.
History
Los Santos developed into a major population and commercial centre during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Its growth was supported by the expansion of maritime trade, railways, manufacturing and the entertainment industry.
The development of Vinewood transformed Los Santos into an international centre for motion pictures. Its studios, theatres and entertainment venues attracted actors, directors and production companies from across the country and abroad.
The city later expanded through the annexation and incorporation of several surrounding communities. Formerly independent municipalities such as Rockford Hills and Davis became part of the wider Los Santos metropolitan area while retaining their own local identities.
Los Santos experienced several periods of civil unrest during the twentieth century. These events influenced later debates surrounding policing, racial inequality, public housing and the relationship between city authorities and local communities.
Geography and districts
Los Santos is divided into approximately 40 districts and neighbourhoods. The city extends from the Pacific coastline in the west to the industrial areas and hills in the east, with Downtown Los Santos forming its principal commercial centre.
Downtown Los Santos
Downtown Los Santos is the city’s central business and financial district. It contains the largest concentration of high-rise buildings and corporate offices, including Maze Bank Tower, the FIB and IAA headquarters and the Union Depository.
Downtown is divided into the neighbourhoods of Pillbox Hill, Mission Row, Textile City and Legion Square.
South Los Santos
South Los Santos is a predominantly residential and industrial area containing several working-class communities and public housing developments.
The district has historically experienced higher levels of poverty, gang activity and violent crime than many other parts of the city. It includes Strawberry, Rancho, Chamberlain Hills, Banning and the incorporated community of Davis.
East Los Santos
East Los Santos is a large industrial district with a substantial Latino population. Its neighbourhoods include La Mesa, Cypress Flats, El Burro Heights and Murrieta Heights.
Although traditionally associated with manufacturing, warehouses and heavy industry, parts of the district have undergone redevelopment and gentrification.
Rockford Hills
Rockford Hills is an affluent commercial and residential district. It was previously an incorporated city before becoming part of Los Santos.
The district is known for luxury housing, designer retail and Portola Drive, one of the city’s principal shopping destinations. Burton is located on its southeastern side.
Vinewood
Vinewood is the centre of the Los Santos entertainment industry. It contains motion-picture studios, theatres, nightclubs, restaurants and tourist attractions.
The district includes Downtown Vinewood, West Vinewood, East Vinewood, Alta, Hawick and Mirror Park.
Vinewood Hills
Vinewood Hills is an affluent residential district overlooking the city. It is known for luxury homes, celebrity residents and the Vinewood Sign.
Richman
Richman is one of the city’s wealthiest residential areas. It is characterised by large estates, low population density and the Los Santos Golf Club.
The University of Los Santos, San Andreas is located in the wider Richman area.
Morningwood
Morningwood is a largely residential and commercial neighbourhood known for its historic theatres, hotels and proximity to the western districts.
Little Seoul
Little Seoul is a central Los Santos district with a diverse population and a significant Korean and broader Asian community.
The area contains residential buildings, restaurants, businesses and several corporate towers.
Del Perro
Del Perro is a coastal residential and commercial community known for its beach, hotels and Pleasure Pier.
It is one of the city’s principal tourism and recreation districts.
Vespucci
Vespucci is a coastal district divided into Vespucci Beach, Vespucci Canals and Puerto Del Sol.
The area is known for its beachfront promenade, canals, marina, entertainment venues and residential communities.
La Puerta
La Puerta is an industrial and maritime district with a long association with fishing, shipping and dock work.
The district contains the Maze Bank Arena and provides access to several major transport routes.
Los Santos International Airport
The Los Santos International Airport district contains the city’s principal airport as well as nearby hotels, warehouses, restaurants and transport facilities.
Port of Los Santos
The Port of Los Santos is the city’s principal commercial seaport and one of the busiest ports in the country.
It is divided primarily between Elysian Island and Terminal. Its facilities include container terminals, warehouses, shipyards, naval installations and Pier 400.
Pacific Bluffs
Pacific Bluffs is an affluent coastal district in western Los Santos. It is characterised by luxury residences, open land and low-density development.
The district is home to the Kortz Center, one of the city’s most prominent cultural institutions.
Cityscape
Most of Los Santos’s high-rise buildings are concentrated in Downtown, although several major towers are located in Little Seoul and Rockford Hills.
Notable buildings include Maze Bank Tower, Arcadius Business Center, the FIB and IAA headquarters, Weazel Plaza, Lombank West and the Union Depository Tower. The Mile High Club remains one of the city’s most prominent construction projects.
The city also contains numerous high-rise residential developments, including Eclipse Towers, Tinsel Towers, Dream Tower and Kayton Towers. Lower-income housing is concentrated largely in South Los Santos, including the Rancho housing developments.
Economy
Los Santos has a diverse economy centred on entertainment, banking, international trade, manufacturing, tourism, real estate and professional services.
Downtown serves as the city’s financial centre and contains the headquarters of several banks, investment firms and government agencies. Vinewood remains the centre of the motion-picture, television and music industries.
The Port of Los Santos supports international shipping, logistics and manufacturing, while Los Santos International Airport connects the city to destinations across the United States and abroad.
Rockford Hills and Portola Drive are associated with luxury fashion, retail and hospitality. The city also supports a large media sector, with newspapers, broadcasters, magazines and independent production companies operating throughout the metropolitan area.
Government
Los Santos operates under a municipal government led by the mayor and other elected or appointed city officials.
The principal seat of government is Los Santos City Hall, located in Rockford Hills.
Andrew Brandenburg serves as the 44th Mayor of Los Santos. His administration has focused on government transparency, municipal services, public safety and cooperation between the city, local businesses and community organisations.
Culture
Film and entertainment
Vinewood is the centre of the city’s film and entertainment industries. The district contains production companies, theatres, music venues, nightclubs and landmarks associated with the development of motion pictures.
Vinewood Boulevard and the Vinewood Sign are among the city’s most recognisable landmarks.
Museums and performing arts
Los Santos contains several museums, galleries, theatres and performance venues.
Major cultural institutions include the Kortz Center, the Sisyphus Theater and the Oriental Theater.
Many of the city’s cinemas and theatres date from the twentieth century and played an important role in the growth of the Vinewood film industry.
Tourism
Popular visitor destinations include Vinewood Boulevard, the Vinewood Sign, Pleasure Pier, Portola Drive, the Kortz Center and the beaches of Del Perro and Vespucci.
The city is also known for luxury hotels, including the Richman Hotel, Rockford Dorset Hotel, Von Crastenburg Hotel and Gentry Manor Hotel.
Sports
Los Santos has a large professional and collegiate sports industry.
Major teams include the Los Santos Panic, Los Santos Kings, Los Santos Pounders, Los Santos Corkers, Los Santos Squeezers, Los Santos Shrimps, Los Santos Jardineros and Los Santos Benders.
The ULSA Beavers represent the University of Los Santos, San Andreas in collegiate competition.
Important sporting locations include Maze Bank Arena, Vinewood Racetrack, Los Santos Golf Club and the Vinewood Bowl.
Transportation
Los Santos has an extensive road network consisting of freeways, highways, major avenues and local streets. Heavy traffic congestion is common throughout the metropolitan area, particularly during peak commuting hours.
Major routes include the Del Perro Freeway, La Puerta Freeway, Olympic Freeway, Los Santos Freeway, Palomino Freeway and Great Ocean Highway.
Important streets include Portola Drive, Vinewood Boulevard, Hawick Avenue, Strawberry Avenue, Vespucci Boulevard, San Andreas Avenue and Eclipse Boulevard.
Public transportation
Public transportation is operated primarily through Los Santos Transit, which provides rapid transit and bus services throughout the city.
Traffic signals and road conditions are coordinated through the Los Santos Transport Traffic Control System.
Airports
Los Santos International Airport is the city’s primary airport and one of its most important transport hubs.
It provides domestic and international passenger services and supports a substantial surrounding district of hotels, warehouses and commercial facilities.
Seaport
The Port of Los Santos is a major centre for international cargo, shipping and maritime industry. Together with the airport, it makes the city one of the country’s most important transport and trade centres.
Education
Los Santos is served by public and private primary, secondary and higher education institutions.
The University of Los Santos, San Andreas, located in Richman, is the city’s principal public research university. Other institutions include Los Santos Elementary and Davis High School.
Healthcare
The city contains a large network of public and private hospitals, clinics and specialist medical centres.
Major institutions include Pillbox Hill Medical Center, Mount Zonah Medical Center, Central Los Santos Medical Center, Eclipse Medical Tower and St. Fiacre Hospital.
Public services
Municipal utilities are provided through several city departments, including the Department of Public Works.
Law enforcement
The Los Santos Police Department is the principal municipal law enforcement agency serving the city.
The Los Santos County Sheriff’s Department provides countywide services, operates detention facilities and performs contracted policing in several communities.
Crime
Crime rates vary considerably across Los Santos. Affluent and commercial districts generally experience lower levels of violent crime, while areas of South and East Los Santos have historically faced higher rates of gang violence, drug trafficking and firearms offences.
